Definition of Godmoding: A player can be described as a godmoder if he or she presumes or declares that his or her own action against another player character is successful without giving the other player character the freedom to act on his own prerogative. They may also be a player who tries to force others to participate in role-playing they don't want to engage in. For instance, a player who unilaterally describes his character as doing something with (or to) another character that would usually require the other to play along — such as having a fight or a sexual encounter — is considered to be godmoding.*
Definition of Metagaming: In role-playing games, a player is metagaming when they use knowledge that is not available to their character in order to change the way they play their character (usually to give them an advantage within the game), such as knowledge of the mathematical nature of character statistics, or the statistics of a creature that the player is familiar with but the character has never encountered. In general, it refers to any gaps between player knowledge and character knowledge which the player acts upon.*
Neither is allowed here at Ruby City. In the case that godmoding or metagaming is taking place, please try to settle it between players. If this does not fix the problem, please bring the issue to the attention of one of the moderators.
Generally speaking, this is not allowed. However, in the case that you play a character that would be familiar with a character's canon [ for example, Matt from Death Note or Konata from Lucky Star ] you have the option of using a permissions meme posted to the OOC community to get permission from individual players regaurding 4th walling their specific players. This way, people who do not wish to have their characters deal with 4th walling will not have to.
This should be self explanatory. In Character happenings should not transfer over into Out Of Character feelings, and vice versa. If the mods see this, it will be addressed accordingly. If you feel a situation has reached this point, please approach a moderator about it so that it can be handled.
In addition, in character actions can and will spur in character consequences. Please keep this in mind when you have characters tear apart the city or other characters.
"In Character" is a term that is often tossed around as a be all end all item. However, we at Ruby City realize that after a time in the city, characters will develop differently than they would in their canon. This is just fine. However, things such as Squall Leonhart suddenly developing the urge to be the lead singer in a rock band is something that would be considered "OOC" and would not be allowed. If you have any questions pertaining to this issue regarding your characters, please contact the moderators. If you are concerned about other characters, please consult their player or their player's HMD.
[First Person - intended only for the main comm rubycity_rp]
[Here you would put some narration, such as the sound of the voice or action that is viewable to the camera (it's a very small camera, keep that in mind, and it's viewing radius is very limited. Internal thoughts aren't necessary, as it's just what someone hears or sees or both.]
Here would be anything your character actually says. This would be just words your character is saying, either to the community intentionally, or accidentally, as though the communicator turned on by accident.
[Third Person - intended only for the logs community rubycity_logs]
Who; This would be a list of characters involved in the log. If the log is "open" this means that anyone is free to join.
When; Approximate time and day that the log is taking place.
Where; Location the log is taking place
Rating; American scale ranging from G (General Audiences) to NC-17 (These usually contain vulgar situations, language, or gratuitous violence. Remember, anything over the rating of R must be locked to friends only!)
Summary; This is a quick explantion of what is occuring in the log. One to two sentences should suffice.
(LJ-Cut your log start!)
The Log itself should consist of general prose writing. That is to say, it should read like something you would read in a novel (that it certainly doesn't have to be that long). Include thoughts, feelings, actions, etc. Whatever you want, just make sure it is in prose and of a good length. Log starters are what all your responders are responding to, so make sure you're giving them something to nash on. Be sure that this is all written in Third Person Past Tense
The rating system at Ruby City, used mostly in the Logs Community rubycity_logs is based on the American Rating System.
G - Refers to anything that would be generally accepted. There's no cursing and no adult situations. Little to no violence.
PG - A little more violence and slight flirting his hinted but rarely explored. The foul language isn't around.
PG-13 - Words like Damn and Hell are used, but nothing like more vulgar than that. Violence is acceptable, frightening situations such as ghosts or monsters, etc. Some partial nudity, but no genitals.
R - Female frontal nudity is possible, as well as vulgar cursing. Violence is nearly unrestrained, but there is little gore. Blood is acceptable.
NC-17 - Full nudity of both sexes, intercourse, lots of gore, etc.
Note: All posts, either in the main community or in the logs community that consist of a rating of more than R must be lj-cut for content and friend-locked to the community.
There is currently no limit on the number of characters you are allowed to play at Ruby City, though this will be on a case by case basis. If you're already struggling to make activity with the characters you currently play, odds are you will not be accepted to play more.
If you idle out of this game, you will be accepted back in on a probationary basis with one character. If you are able to make activity with that one character for two activity checks, you may be allowed to app another, so long as you aren't struggling to make activity any longer and the mods are certain you can handle another.
When choosing to play multiple characters from the same canon, keep in mind the playercest rule.
Ruby City has decided to allow Fandom OC applications. However these characters are held to a higher standard than regular applicants. Thier application is far more in depth, and the moderators will look over OC applications with a much more strict eye. The only requirment Ruby City has for Fandom OCs, is that they have at least a marginal presence in their Canon to begin with. In short, Fandom OCs are simply extremely minor canon characters that a player has breathed life into to fully round them out.
✗AU Characters / Multiples
Ruby City's outlook on multiples and AU is very simple. Firstly, we only allow one version of any character to exist in the city at the same time. The characters do not necessarily need to match the universe any potential canonmates are from either.
Any AU must be an official canon AU, rather than a player-created or fandom AU. For example, the multitude of Legend of Zelda games all count as possible AUs, as do the myriad of DC/Marvel Universe AUs. What this does not include are universes or scenarios which the applicant has made themselves.
What is playercest? It is when a mun of two different characters interacts with themselves using said characters. Ruby City does not mind a player carrying conversations between their characters, as long as it is not the majority of what they do in game. In addition, any interaction between the characters must remain minor. Playercesting two main characters of a series, or developing important relationships between two characters with the same player is not allowed. Playercest is allowed in the rubycity_rp community, but not in rubycity_logs unless a character played by another player is also present in the log. Playercest actions will not count for activity checks.
Due to playercest concerns, we have different standards for situations where one player wishes to play more than one character from a single canon. Please see the FAQ for more on this subject.
Activity at Ruby City is simple. In order to pass monthly activity checks, your character
must do one of the following each month:
✗ post to rubycity_rp
✗participate in a log in rubycity_logs
✗participate in a comment string that is at least 15 comments long or more.
Those who seem to be unable to meet activity checks or else have a habit of idling out of the game soon after apping in a character may be refused on such a basis to apply into Ruby City if it has shown itself to be a significant enough problem with the player. It isn't fair for anyone (castmates, other players and the like) for another person to be allowed to character squat.
If activity is showing itself to be a continued problem for a player, then the mods will intervene if necessary. People may be put on probation until they can prove that they are able to keep up with activity, or else dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Activity checks are performed on the 5th of every month. Players are then given 4 days to post their activity proof in an Activity Check post in rubycity_ooc. At this time, characters and players who have not checked in will be listed in a separate post and given a second chance to respond with proof of activity.
If a player wishes to reclaim a character that has not met the activity requirements for the activity check period, they can comment to reclaim their characters as well. Characters reclaimed this way must then post double activity for the following month or lose their character.
Players that are on hiatus during the time of the activity check do not need to check in themselves. We will review their activity ourselves and if they do not meet activity we will consider the circumstances surrounding their hiatus. Real life comes before RP and it is highly unlikely we will remove anyone from the game who is on hiatus during a check. That said, if it becomes apparent that hiatuses are being used to duck activity checks or to disguise a general lack of activity, this issue will be addressed with the player individually.
Characters that are lost during an Activity Check may be reapplied for by the same player, but only after a two (2) week waiting period. This two weeks begins when the Second Chance round of the Activity Check closes.
Hiatuses are simple. In order to go on hiatus, a player is required to post to the hiatus page. And post to the OOC community, if they want to inform those their character has CR with of their characters' absence.
If you choose, when you go on hiatus all of your characters find themselves lost in the catacombs for that duration. They will be provided enough food and drink to survive down there for however long. However, this is only an option and you are more than welcome to come up with things for your character to do while they're gone.
Drops are done like hiatuses. When a player wishes to drop a character, they must make a comment on the drop post linked from the main page.
